CD+G disc

This is the "original" Karaoke format originally created by Philips and Sony and defined in the Red Book. The storage media is the same as for standard audio CDs, and hence CD+G Karaoke discs can be played in any CD player if you only want to listen to the music.

The graphics of CD+G discs are stored in space on the disc that are unused for normal audio CDs. This space is known as sub-channels, and can - as defined in the Red Book - be used for different purposes, of which Karaoke is one.

To be able to read and display the graphics on a CD+G disc you will need a player equipped with a CD drive capable of reading sub-channel information as well as software that can decode and display the graphics.

On a normal audio disc the sound information is protected by an error correction scheme, meaning that even if the disc gets somewhat scratched it can be played with any errors. If the scratches gets too heavy though the error correction cannot help and you will hear glitches or no sound at all. All CD drives have built in error correction hardware that takes care of fixing the sound before it is sent from the drive to the amplifier or other receivers.

Karaoke graphics on CD+G discs are also protected by an error correction scheme that allows the graphics to be displayed correctly even if the disc is moderately scratched. However, since Karaoke usage is much less common than just audio playback there are a lot of CD drives that do not have built-in error correction mechanisms for the sub-channel information. The result of this is that most CD+G software is limited to using CD drives from just a few manufacturers, and also only few models from each manufacturer. If you use CD drives without the sub-channel error correction you will be forced to drop ripping speed to a minimum, and can still have no guaranties for achieving error free rips.

CDGFix 3 Super is one of only a few Karaoke softwares that implements it's own error correction module according to the Red Book specifications. As a result you can use many more CD drives with CDGFix 3 Super than other CD+G ripping software and still achieve perfect error free rips. (CDGFix 3 Super also has a feature that lets you run automatic error correction on tracks that are ripped using other software - see Scan CD+G File for details.) The only requirement for the CD drive to use with CDGFix 3 Super is that it is capable of reading the sub-channel information (see the CD/DVD-Drives Reading page of the Settings dialog for information on how to check this).

A CD+G discs is loaded into the CDGFix 3 Super Project window by selecting Load Disc on the Project menu. Please refer to the topic Working with projects for more information on this. CDGFix 3 Super will then read the table of contents on the disc and display the list of available tracks.
